The SMU mens soccer team's season came to a heart-breaking end on Friday night in North Carolina as the Mustangs bowed out of the NCAA tournament in penalty kicks to UNC. An early goal from Arthur Ivo got SMU off to a dream start, but as the match wore on North Carolina slowly took over. SMU broke open the scoring early with a goal by Arthur Ivo in the fifth minute. Freshman Robbie Derschang broke down the left side and fed a ball down the center of the field to Ivo who ran on behind the defense and fired the ball from 14 yards out. The goal was Ivo's 10th of the season.
UNC got their legs under them and began working on getting the goal back. It didn't take long either as Kirk Urso scored from 12 yards out on a cross from Enzo Martinez in the 10th minute. The tally was his fifth of the season.
SMU hung on by a thread for long stretches of the match as the Tar Hells pounded away at the SMU goal. Keeper Craig Hill made several quality saves to keep the match tied into overtime. The Mustangs were able to get the match to penalty kicks, but UNC was perfect on all four of their spot kicks while SMU missed a pair.
SMU ends a very succesful season with a record of 16-2-2. North Carolina advances to next weekend's College Cup.
