The SMU womens soccer team put up a valiant fight but were unable to overcome a talented 10th ranked Virginia squad losing 2-1.  The game was the finale of the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational in Austin.

The two teams fought it out to a scoreless first half as SMU rose to the challenge against the ACC soccer powers.  The game opened up after the break though and Virginia jumped ahead soon after the opening second half whistle on a Cameron Miller.

"When you go down, you can crumble or fight," Head Coach Chris Petrucelli said. "I thought we showed a lot of fight."

Virginia made it 2-0 and put the match on ice as Makenzy Doniak was taken down just outside of the SMU box to set up a free kick. Julia Roberts curled the free kick over the wall and into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

The Lady Mustangs clawed one back late on as Rachael Larson notched her first career goal for SMU.  It was not to be enough though as UVA won 2-1.

In defeat, SMU stood strong against a tough Virginia squad that is considered one of the elite programs in the nation. The effort displayed by the Mustangs was pleasing to Petrucelli, who believes good things are still in store for his team.

"I thought we played really hard," Petrucelli said. "If we play with that effort, we'll win a lot of games."

Next up for SMU is a trip to face rivals TCU on Friday night in Fort Worth.  Kickoff at 7:00 with a huge crowd expected.
