SMU womens soccer gets blasted twice to open 2014 season

Well that was not the start that SMU womens soccer head coach Chris Petrucelli was hoping for.  The SMU Lady Mustangs opened the season with a pair of road games this weekend and got blasted on both occasions.

First up was a trip to Lincoln to face Nebraska and despite returning eight starters from last year SMU was smashed 4-0.  The 13th ranked Cornhuskers showed why they are highly touted racing out to a 3-0 lead in the opening half hour of play.  From there they cruised to the easy victory.

From there SMU travelled to Lawrence to take on Kansas.  The result was a 3-0 loss.  At least this time SMU kept the match close well into the 2nd half.  Kansas notched two goals in the final twenty minutes to blow it open.  SMU goalkeeper Shannon Moroney was injured in the second half.  Somehow the team only has one other keeper on the entire roster and she was injured as well previously.  Thus they were forced to throw midfielder Lissi Lonsberry into the net for the final thirty minutes.  You would think a major Division 1 college soccer program would have more than two goalkeepers on their roster, but I guess not.  Let's hope the Moroney injury is short term.

SMU opens a four game homestand next weekend and will welcome Texas Southern, Missouri, Oral Roberts and UT San Antonio to Dallas in succession.
