The SMU women opened the 2010 season with a 1-0 win over Florida International in Dallas. It was a very solid defensive effort for the Lady Mustangs as they limited FIU to ten shots on the evening with goalkeeper Courtney Webb posting 6 saves in the shutout. SMU got the winning goal in the 77th minute as Lauren Shepherd fired home from right side that beat the FIU keeper to the backpost. The defense did the job and SMU won their season opener. "We felt like going in to the game we needed to keep a good shape defensively, so we kept the field that they could play in very small and very tight," said head coach Brent Erwin. "In the first half, we just didn't do that. We calmed ourselves down at halftime. In the second half, we kept a better shape which allowed us to control the ball more which put us in a good position to attack, and we got the goal." SMU will take their first road trip of the season next weekend as they take on No. 5 Portland Aug. 27. The Mustangs continue their road trip Aug. 29 as the Ponies take on the Oregon Ducks for the first time in school history.
