The SMU mens soccer team won their opening game of the SMU Classic on Friday night beating Dartmouth 2-1 in overtime. Juan Castillo netted the dramatic winner in the 93rd minute of play.
Both teams scored in the opening half of play. SMU got off to a quick start as Robbie Derschang scored in the 3rd minute of play as he put home a cross from Arthur Ivo. Dartmouth would answer back though midway through the half when Aaron Gaide put home a rebound after SMU keeper Jaime Ibarra made a stop on the initial shot.
Both sides were unable to score in the second half and match would need extra time to find a winner. The winner came shortly after the extra period began as Adam Still fired a long freekick into the Dartmouth penalty area. Freshman Aaron Simmons headed the ball on and Juan Castillo put it home.
Next SMU faces Washington in the conlusion of the tournament Sunday evening.
