Southlake boys poised for a big 2013

Southlake is not just a football school.  They also have a very well respected boys soccer program led by coach Greg Oglesby.  The school has a pair of State Championships and  carry a seven year playoff streak as they start the 2013 season.

The 2011 season was a magical year for Southlake as they raced to a State Championship behind the dynamic goalscoring of Mac McGuire. Last year they crashed out to a very good Richland squad led by the dynamic Cuadra brothers giving up a late goal in a 1-0 playoff loss.  This year Richland will once again provide major competition for the Dragons.

Senior Tanner Brennan has been through both the elation of the State Championship in 2011 and the tough playoff loss last year.  Tanner played his club ball with the DFW Tejanos 94 boys squad that sent several players to the college soccer ranks last year and looks to be a leader for the Dragons this year.

Via email Tanner said “I'm excited for this year's soccer team. We have a lot of returning starters, as well as a senior-heavy team. Our coaches know us individually and are doing a great job bringing the team to its highest caliber. I feel it will be a very promising year for Carroll.”

Last year Southlake was led by its defense and this year should be no different as they should have one of the top defenses not only in the area but in all of Texas.  All four starters on the backline will be seniors so there will be experience and leadership to carry the Dragons in tight matches.

Carroll opens on Tuesday as they make the short trip to face rivals Grapevine at Mustang-Panther Stadium.  They also have an attractive matchup with Allen on January 11th before traveling south to attend a tournament in Round Rock.  Once district begins it looks to be a three team race between Southlake, Keller and Richland for the title.
