Southlake rolls into Regional Final

Southlake Carroll, which came in sporting a 24-0-3 record, received an early goal from Hunter Horvath and made it stand in a 1-0 victory over El Paso Coronado in a Class 5A Region 1 semifinal on Friday at Grande Communications Stadium.

It was Carroll's second straight shutout after a 5-0 victory against district rival Keller in the regional quarterfinals.  The goal by Horvath, which came just four minutes in, could come in handy against a skilled Plano squad that scored twice on Arlington Martin in the first seven minutes of its regional semifinal. The two will play for a spot in next week's state tournament in Georgetown at 3pm Saturday.

"We played them last year and beat them 1-0 in overtime the round before this," Hunter Horvath said. "It should be a good one."

A heads-up play by Mac McGuire to knock the ball out of bounds off a Thunderbirds defender set Carroll (25-0-3) up with its first corner kick four minutes in. The first one wasn't successful in scoring a goal, but it was successful in setting up another corner.

The second time, Dragons forward Matt Leach came through with an elevated ball that Horvath headed in to the right side.

"I was just looking for a good ball," said Horvath of his 12th goal. "Luckily Matt gave me a good ball and it was easy. The fact that we were able to jump on them early really helped us. It let us relax and got our confidence up. That really helped us going forward, because we were a little nervous."

Leach nearly made it a 2-0 game at the 8:30 mark of the first when he faked out a Coronado defender and fired a laser off the crossbar from 35 yards out.  Coronado, which had two strong scoring chances, ended its year 19-8-1.
