The wind played havoc Friday evening at the Class 5A Region I high school soccer tournament as goals were scored in bunches. Southlake had a chance to make it an all-DFW final and looked well on their way after Vincent Mediate notched a first half hat trick giving Southlake a 4-2 halftime lead. El Paso Bel Air would rally though and edge the Dragons 6-5 in overtime at Grande Communications Stadium.
After Bel Air's Alonzo Gallegos got the Highlanders (28-1) on the board first in the ninth minute, Mediate cashed in on a free kick in the 13th minute for the first of his three goals. Vincent Mediate's second goal came less than two minutes later as he placed a rebounded ball over considerable traffic in front of him and into the net. Mediate's final goal came in the 38th minute via penalty kick and gave Carroll a 4-2 lead at halftime. Erich Dezoeten also scored for Carroll in the first half.
El Paso Bel Air totally flipped the game scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of the second half. Andy Vargas set up Daniel Iglesias for the first and John W. Ramos outraced three Dragons to tie the game at 4. Carroll briefly retook the lead after Mac McGuire broke away for a goal in the 60th minute. However, three minutes later, Bel Air's Jesus Perez scrambled to get off a contested kick to retie the match at 5.
In the fifth minute of the first overtime 10-minute half, Julio Alarcon headed in a corner kick from Alex Porras to give Bel Air the winning goal. Bel Air meets Dallas Jesuit (22-0) at 3 pm today for a state tournament berth.
