There's nothing better than in soccer than early goals to get the playoff jitters out. Southlake Carroll got a goal from Andrew Baker in the fourth minute and never looked back in a 2-1 victory over Arlington Lamar in their bi-district meeting Friday night at Dragon Stadium.

“It was awesome to put our team in front and get the motivation going,” Baker said of his early strike. “That was real important.”

The Dragons took advantage of their first scoring opportunity. Baker received a through ball down the middle of the field that sprung him one-on-one with Lamar keeper Edgar Chavez. Baker made no mistake, slotting the ball to Chavez’s right for the early 1-0 lead.

“I thought we had a great first 10 to 12 minutes,” Dragons coach Greg Oglesby said. “Then I thought Lamar responded really well.”

Carroll had a golden opportunity to make it 2-0 in the 11th minute as Tommy Price fed Jack Fuller a pass to the right side of the area. Chavez came out to meet Fuller and was up to the task.

The Dragons kept the pressure on and in the 29th minute Jack Parrish unleashed a hard shot that Chavez was able to block but not control. The Vikings eventually cleared to stay a goal back at the intermission.

Carroll did double the lead in the 53rd minute. Fuller again split the Vikings’ defense with a through ball down the middle. Chavez came out to meet it, but his sliding clearance landed right at the feet of Parrish, who calmly chipped into an empty net from just inside 30 yards.

Lamar got back into the game in the 63rd minute. Osseil Maldonado crafted a long-range shot from the left side of the field. About 25 yards out, he dipped a ball just over the outstretched arms of Dragons keeper Patrick Leal. The goal broke Carroll’s streak of four consecutive shutouts and was only their 15th goal allowed in 27 games this season.

“They’ve done a tremendous job,” Oglesby said of his defense. “That’s a solid team over there and to keep them to one goal in this type of environment, in a playoff game, it’s pretty mature."

Next up for Southlake Carroll will be West Texas powers El Paso Bel Air later this week.
