Southlake knocks off Allen 2-0

Southlake took control of Group C at the Richland Winter Blast with a 2-0 win over the Allen Eagles at Birdville Stadium.  A pair of set pieces proved to be the difference.

I wrote yesterday about Southlake's potential on set pieces.  You had better be switched on to defend them against the Dragons.  Allen was not as two corner kicks from the foot of #14 Walker Beasley ended up in the back of Allen's net.

The first goal came in the 10th minute and was headed home by Southlake centerback #21 Michael Friedman.  The second goal came just before halftime.  Beasley swung in a perfect ball once again and there was a pileup in front of goal.  The ball ended up in the goal along with several players and the goalkeeper.  There probably should have been a foul called, but the goal stood despite the protests of the Allen coaches.

The second half saw the Southlake defense work their magic.  Allen rarely got close to the Southlake goal as Friedman, Tanner Brennan and Tommy Price shut the door for the 2-0 shutout win.

The result leaves Southlake in control of Group C needing only a draw tomorrow morning against North Side to advance to the semifinals.

Elsewhere, an impressive El Paso Americas team has won Group A following up a smashing of host Richland with a 1-0 victory over Rowlett.  Americas won it in the final two minutes on a header from Misael Villareal.
