Southlake and Trinity battle to a draw

Southlake and Trinity opened the 2013 high school season with a scoreless draw Thursday afternoon at the Winter Blast Tournament.

Certainly a good result for Trinity as they claimed a result against one of the better teams in NTx.  I guess it should be no surprise for Southlake though.

The opening half saw Southlake box the game as they had almost all of the ball.  Their short passing game looks as good as ever.  The problem is that their entire game is in the midfield.  No forward presence at all.

Despite a 15 mile an hour wind and having 80% of the ball, Southlake only managed two shots on goal the first half.  A good header off a corner kick and a ball that forced the Trinity keeper to push it over the crossbar.

The second half Trinity had the wind, but they still never sniffed the Southlake goal.  Centerbacks Tanner Brennan and Michael Friedman are very good and holding midfield Tommy Price dominates.

On the offensive end Southlake was not very dangerous though.  They look exactly like last year where they rarely scored from the run of play.  Set pieces look to be their best bet once again this year as their corners and long throws looked quite dangerous.

The formation is a definite problem.  The defense is elite, but tactically speaking the forwards are positioned terribly and it is a coaching issue.  Much of the match they were positioned a good 30 yards apart.  The two forwards linked up exactly one time yesterday.  That is one pass between them in the entire match!  That is not going to produce many goals at all.

Southlake takes the field today with an even bigger test than Trinity as they play a tough Allen squad at 3:45.
