Boston University is getting one heck of an athlete in Southlake Carroll's Mac McGuire. In football, he was The Associated Press Class 5A All-State first-team kicker. As a track athlete, he's one of the best 800-meter runners in the area and the anchor leg of the Dragons' mile relay that holds one of the fastest times in the state this season.
Now, McGuire can add the Star-Telegram Boys Soccer Super Team Player of the Year to his list of accomplishments. McGuire, who will play soccer at Boston U., used his speed and well-put-together frame to become an unstoppable force on the pitch. He scored 37 goals and dished out 21 assists for the Dragons, who won the Class 5A state championship two weeks ago and finished with a 28-0-3 record.
"I thought back about it and I just think that 37 goals is a ton," McGuire said. "I couldn't have done it without my team. I definitely couldn't have done it without them. Everyone was just so unselfish, and I think that's a big part of why I scored so much and why I got so many assists. That's a perfect season for me."
The proverbial cherry on top came with three minutes left in the season when Mac McGuire uncorked a left-footed bender from 25 yards on the right side to cap Carroll's 2-0 victory over Round Rock McNeil in the championship game.
"It was perfect," he said.
McGuire, who breezed past his preseason expectations of 24 goals and 15 assists, finished two goals short of tying Kyle Brown's school record. Brown went on to play professionally in Major League Soccer .
"I don't know if I ever saw him get knocked off the ball," Carroll coach Greg Oglesby said of McGuire. "He has an unbridled passion for scoring goals. Great goal scorers have that, as well as a knack for actually getting it done."
