The cream of the crop is rising as we progress into the later rounds of the Texas high school soccer playoffs. The Mansfield schools in particular have been quite successful so far. Both Mansfield and Mansfield Legacy advanced last night on the boys side and the Mansfield Timberview girls knocked off city rival Mansfield Legacy. Mansfield Legacy 2, Arlington Seguin 0: The Legacy boys (19-8-2) just wanted to play its style, a good, solid game of possession. It did, and Legacy freshman Connor Copeland scored the winner in the first half. The Broncos will play Denton Guyer next week. Mansfield 1, El Paso Hanks 0: Tigers junior sweeper Evan Simmons scored a long free kick with 3 minutes left in the first half to lift Mansfield to a victory. Simmons, a defensive player with five goals on the year, booted the ball over everyone and put it in the top of the goal in what turned out to be the only goal of the match. Mansfield (12-4-6) moves on to face El Paso Bel Air. Mansfield Timberview 1, Mansfield Legacy 0: On paper, perhaps the game looked one-sided and Legacy certainly gave Timberview a scare. But Kathryn Durham scored the only goal on a left-footer from 22 yards out with 16:13 remaining, sending the Wolves (16-3-3) to the 4A Region I quarterfinals. "When you play a district rival in the third round of the playoffs," Timberview coach Casey McLean said, "this is exactly what you expect. One goal. It’s a battle." Midland 2, Fort Worth Paschal 0: The Lady Panthers (21-4) never could find the back of the net in West Texas. After a scoreless first half, Midland scored in the first 90 seconds of the second half and added a late goal on a penalty kick. "They got a quick transition goal to start that half and we were just in shock," Paschal coach Rick Adams said.
