TCU falls to #21 West Virginia in Big 12 opener

The stage was set.  TCU's first ever Big 12 match.  A big home crowd and a solid 21st ranked West Virginia team as the opponent.

Things could not have gotten off to a better start either as TCU jumped ahead at the ten minute mark.  A rocket from the foot of Kelly Johnson was saved by WV keeper Sara Keane but Makenzie Koch was there to kock in the loose ball.

"We were able to keep the ball early in the game and it was an opportunity for Kelly (Johnson) to have strike on goal from distance and she hit it hard and low and the keeper had problems holding on to it and luckily Makenzie (Koch) was there to bang it in," said TCU coach Eric Bell.

West Virginia were not deterred though as they set about getting the goal back.  Just before halftime they evened the game.  A foul by the Horned Frogs in the 41st minute proved to the breaking point as it set up a free kick deep in the defensive zone. The feed across the box found its way to Mallory Smith who knocked it over to a wide-open Amanda Hill. She tapped it over a diving Arnold to tie the game at one.

Early pressure in the second half by the Mountaineers resulted in the go-ahead goal just six minutes into the half. West Virginia worked the ball deep in the six yard box and Bri Rodriguez fired off a shot that was blocked by a TCU defender. A minute later the ball found its way to Bry McCarthy who crossed it back across the box where Rodriguez was there to head it in for the 2-1 lead.

TCU falls to 5-5-1 overall and 0-1-0 in Big 12 play. The Frogs stay home and host Kansas Sunday afternoon. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.
