TCU soccer pulls monster upset of Texas

It was a monster Fort Worth crowd that witnessed the first Big 12 win for TCU womens soccer.  On Sunday TCU knocked off the Texas Longhorns 1-0.

It was a windy day and it had a huge affect on the match.  TCU had the wind in the opening half of play and were on the front foot most of the 45 minutes.  In the 18th minute the attacking play was rewarded as TCU took the lead through Kelly Johnson.  She received a pass from Ashley Jones and fired a spectacular shot into the top corner of the net sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Despite several corner kicks, TCU was unable to cash in another goal before the half.  Texas had the wind the second half and one goal might not be enough of a lead.

In stepped the TCU defense.  Texas mounted a furious rally aided by the wind, but the TCU backline stood strong.  UT generated several shots, but all seemed to miss the target.  The best chance to tie the game came in the 67th minute as Kelly Shimmick headed a ball destined for the back of the TCU net.  At the last second TCU defender Carly Bowen headed the ball away just before it crossed the line.

"We are pretty fired up to beat a quality opponent and get our first Big 12 victory of the season," said head coach Eric Bell.

TCU close the regular season next Friday on the road in Waco against Baylor who sit 2nd in the Big 12 currently.
