TCU women open season with tie at New Mexico

The TCU women's soccer team is gearing up for a big year.  A new coach on hand and the daunting challenge of joining the Big XII.  On Friday night they kicked off the season with a good display at New Mexico.

It was an even first half with neither side really able to gain much advantage.  UNM started on the front foot, but the Lady Frogs settled in well and the match went scoreless to halftime.

The second half was as even as the first, but TCU jumped ahead in the 70th minute through Kelly Johnson. Makenzie Koch delivered a ball to the back post where Kelly Johnson was waiting to put it in the back of the net, giving the Horned Frogs a 1-0 lead over the two-time defending Mountain West champions.

New Mexico answered right back though taking less than 10 minutes to tie the game.Rachel Montoya found Liz Nare with a cross and she buried it past Frogs keeper Vittoria Arnold.  The match ended 1-1 with overtime being cancelled due to bad weather that rolled in.

"I was impressed with how we defended as a group for most of the game," head coach Eric Bell, in his first match in charge of the Horned Frogs, said. "We were able to score, which is always a positive. We did a good job limiting the opportunities that New Mexico had. It is a good start for us. We would have liked to win, but it's a good starting point."
