TCU women upset #14 West Virginia in Big 12 Tourney

Two huge wins in the span of a couple of weeks for the Lady Frogs soccer team has spirits soaring.  First TCU knocked off Texas and now TCU upset 14th ranked West Virginia 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Soccer Tournament.

Set pieces proved to be the difference as TCU capitalized on theirs and West Virginia left theirs begging.  Both TCU goals came off corner kicks while West Virginia had nothing to show from 9 corners.  TCU's Bobbi Clemmer was putting her corner kicks right on the money with Monica Alvarado and Kelly Johnson both scoring off the balls.

In addition to wasting set pieces, West Virginia was content to rely on long range shots rather than working the ball into the TCU penalty area.  The TCU defense was happy to let them fire from distance as they watched shot after shot miss the frame.  The Mountaineers created very few clear chances as a result.

The goals came early in both halves and they set the tone for each 45 as West Virginia had trouble getting their feet underneath them after the scores.

It was a great game," said TCU coach Eric Bell. "The game plan we came up with was quite good, a credit to my coaching staff for coming up with a plan that was effective, and the kids were able to execute. I think they got confidence from the first half, seeing that it was working. We knew they were going to come out in the second half and play a little bit higher, but I think we handle the pressure quite well.

The TCU women are the first #8 seed to win a game in the Big 12 tournament since in 9 years. Now a rematch looms as the Horned Frogs advance to the semifinals to face Texas Friday night.
