FC Dallas blast Houston Dynamo in Texas Derby

Saturday brought us the 2014 installment of the Texas Derby between FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo.  A Lone Star State grudge match for sure.  Both teams arrived in Houston with solid starts to the MLS season under their belts.  FCD sit 3-0-1 tops in the MLS Western Conference while the Dynamo are 2-1.

Houston came out flying from the opening whistle forcing a Chris Seitz save after only forty seconds. They kept up the pressure for a solid ten minutes before finally the visitors began to gain their footing.

Slowly the match began to tilt in the favor of Dallas as Mauro Diaz began to get ahold of the ball more and establish some possession.  Soon they would be rewarded as Diaz worked a little magic inside the eighteen.

Diaz grabbed hold of the ball in the middle of three Dynamo players.  He nutmegged a defender and started to shoot at goal.  As he swung Diaz was clipped and tripped resulting in a penalty kick.  Michel expertly finished and Dallas had their lead.

Houston would fight right back though heaping loads of pressure on the Dallas defense.  A series of rapid fire corner kicks finally would result an goal as Ricardo Clark headed home.  The game would go to the break all even at one.

The second half began quietly for the first fifteen minutes, but the game would take a huge turn on the hour mark.  Houston was trying to come out of their back down the right side.  FCD's Jair Benitez blocked the pass out and the ball went down the line for the speedy Fabian Castillo to chase down.

Castillo was away, getting to the ball before David Horst who lunged in on the tackle sending Castillo rolling.  The referee immediately raced over and showed  Horst a straight red.  A bit harsh but Horst was off to the dressing room nonetheless.

Dallas would be a man up for the final thirty minutes.  It only took seconds for Houston to pay though as Mauro Diaz curled in a perfect free kick that JeVaugh Watson headed home for the 2-1 lead.  The Dynamo were in big trouble.

Two more balls would be in the back of the Houston net within a few minutes and Dallas would be well ahead at 4-1 to the shock of the Dynamo fans.  JeVaugh Watson would be at the center of both goals.  On the first a Michel corner was perfectly curled into the six where Watson was tied up with a pair of defenders.  The ball deflected off a Dynamo head and into the net for an own goal.

A minute later a wonderful Mauro Diaz pass would set up Watson to slot home.  Fifteen minutes to go and game over.  A late penalty kick was earned by Houston when Jair Benitez pulled down Kofi Sarkodie.  Chris Seitz flew to his right and made a fine save on the spot kick to just rub more salt in the wound of the bad Dynamo evening.  Final score 4-1 FC Dallas.

I think it's time the rest of the league began paying attention to this FC Dallas team.  They have dynamic attacking options that can stretch the best of any MLS team.  Next weekend Clint Dempsey and the Seattle Sounders come to Toyota Park.
