Sunday kicked off the The 40th edition of the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup.  After the Opening Ceremonies concluded fans were treated to the marquee match of the day took place between the Premier League’s Liverpool FC and defending Gordon Jago Super Group Champion Tigres.  In front of what was a Dallas Cup opening day record attendance of nearly 21,000 both teams took the Cotton Bowl field on a perfect evening.

Tigres signaled their intentions early on as Sergio Trevino opened up the scoring with a goal in the 15th minute. Trevino’s shot clipped the crossbar, bounced down, and just narrowly crossed the goal line, but it was enough to put Tigres in front 1-0.  Liverpool answered right back though when striker Bobby Duncan cut inside the box and connected on a beautiful left footed strike to level the game at 1-1 in the 21st minute.  The English side kept the momentum and in the 34th minute the Red’s captain Rhys Williams tacked on a goal of his own with a strong header and Liverpool took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break.

As entertaining as the opening half had been, the second half was even more exciting. The three time Super Group champion, Tigres, came out of the break firing and put Liverpool under pressure immediately.  Patrick Ogama tied the match with a penalty kick in the 50th minute.  Only minutes after the penalty Stephen Rivas added another goal in the 56th minute pushing the Mexican side back in front 3-2.

Liverpool set about trying to get the tying goal before time ran out, but it was the squad from Mexico that would strike again.  In the 90th minute, Sergio Trevino scored his second goal of the game to make the score 4-2, securing the impressive win for Tigres as they start their quest for another Dallas Cup title.

Liverpool will try to bounce back on Monday as they face New York City FC while Tigres face off against Ikapa United from South Africa.
