Trinity rallies late for draw earns playoff berth

The Trinity boys soccer team definitely left it late on Tuesday night at Irving MacArthur.  Behind 3-2 to the 8th place Irving MacArthur Cardinals with less than 10 minutes to play, the Trojans had to make something out of what would be their final set piece of the game.  Sophomore midfielder Jose Martinez curled the free kick from 35 yards out into the penalty box and junior midfielder Juan Lopez finished the header into the back of the net with 12:37 left to play to give the Trojans a 3-3 tie Tuesday night in a District 6-5A boyssoccer game.

Despite some feverous pushes from the Cardinals late, Trinity (9-6-4, 8-5-3) held on for the crucial point. The result clinched a playoff spot and moved Trinity past Irving into third place in district with 27 points.

"It's been like this all year. We've had to fight back several times," Trinity coach Tracy Duren said. "I think sometimes we make it harder than it has to be. But I'm proud of the boys for what they did and how they fought."

Another Lopez, junior forward Austin Lopez, scored the other two goals for the Trojans.  The first one came off a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1 with 13:02 left in the first half.  After a slow start, MacArthur (6-10-3, 4-8-5, 16 points) battled back. Senior midfielder Lautaro Guevara scored off a rebound from the Trinity goalie to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead with 14:07 left in the first half.

Only seven minutes after Austin Lopez tied the game, sophomore forward Emmanuel Yacho weaved through the Trojans defense and gave MacArthur a 2-1 lead into halftime.  The Cardinals' lead didn't last long, with Austin Lopez connecting on his second goal just a minute into the second half.
