Timberview, on the other hand, came in wearing freshly ordered District 5-5A championship shirts that it earned as part of a 16-2-3 regular season. Guess which team will be playing in the area round later this week?
The thought of a goal actually being scored during regulation became somewhat of an afterthought with both teams' defenses halting any offensive rhythm. Then, with the clock ticking under nine minutes, Trinity sophomore Anna Flobeck broke free between several Timberview defenders and lightly tapped the ball out of the reach of Wolves goalie Eunice Figueroa to help the Trojans to a 1-0 victory at Cravens Field.
Her teammates rushed to her side on the field as the clock struck 0:00, signifying Trinity's advancement to the area round where it will meet today's winner between Keller Fossil Ridge and Lewisville Hebron later this week.
"Anna has really raw, physical talent, and once she put on the jets it works out pretty good," Trinity coach Kurt Clawson said. "All of the distributors were behind her. She tried that little tap around. I try and tell her that not everything has to be some World Cup laser. Toe pokes work just fine. She scored on a toe poke last week, too."
It was a shocking blow to a Timberview team (16-3-3) that won a very competitive district championship over the likes of Mansfield, Midlothian and Mansfield Legacy. Clawson knew that if his team played its brand of soccer, the upset could happen.
"Really the only district losses we had were to really good Grapevine and Colleyville Heritage teams, and with LD Bell, which we are not used to losing to," he said. "We took care of business to get here. I told them to forget that they were district champs, and if you play your best and play our type of soccer, we will always have a chance. [Timberview coach Casey McLean] did dictate it a little by playing three up top. So I had to do some shifting around, but otherwise we played our type of soccer."
Timberview tested Trinity's defense early in the first half, but could never manage to get the ball past freshman goalie Brooke Bohannon. She made he first save 63 seconds in on a 15 yard strike from Jazzy Baca.
Trinity (9-8-3) had a golden opportunity to take an early lead five minutes in when Flobeck got behind the Wolves' defense and scorched a shot past goalie Figueroa. But that's when Jackie Guardiola, who had positioned herself perfectly on the goal line, stopped the ball's path into the net deflecting it away. Both teams had other chances, but the pickings were slim until Anna Flobeck used her individual skill to tap Trinity into the next round.
