Trinity and Colleyville Heritage battle to open district soccer play

Nothing like a nice frigid night to open the district soccer  season.   Tuesday night Colleyville Heritage visited Pennington Field to face the Trinity Trojans as both sides opened the district 6-5A soccer schedule.

It was a quite important game for both sides as Heritage wanted to send a message that they would need to be reckoned with this year after missing the playoffs in 2013.  Meanwhile, Coach Tracey Duren wanted to build upon last year's playoff showing.

It was obvious from the very start that Colleyville's midfield was much more dynamic and athletic than the Trinity midfield.  It didn't take long for Heritage to cash in as Matthew Watson got in behind the Trinity right back and fire home from close range.  1-0 Colleyville in the 3rd minute.  If Trinity did not start putting up a fight in the midfield it would certainly be a long, cold night for the Trojans.

The next fifteen minutes we better for Trinity as they began to work their way into the match.  The increased effort still couldn't mask the Heritage quality advantage.  To survive Trinity was simply going to have to outwork Colleyville all over the field.

With 16 minutes to play in the opening half it looked like Colleyville would double their lead as a set piece led to chaos in the Trojan penalty area.  The Trinity keeper was pulled out of the net and Heritage lifted a soft chip headed into the net.  Luckily for the Trojans, center back Dylan Yu had dropped back to cover the empty net and he was able to jump and clear the ball off the line at the last second.

Heritage would generate one last chance at the end of the half as a ball over the top surprised the Trinity defense.  Forward Bennet Packheifer was off to the races as the linesman missed the clear offside call.  Keeper Ian Reyes was up to the task though as he made the save keeping the score 1-0 at the break.

Trinity started brighter after the restart as they looked intent on getting the match tied up.  They were getting down the right side in the opening ten minutes, but were unable to get anything on goal.

Heritage countered off a Trinity offense throw and got in behind the defense in the 56th minute.  Andreas Zehetmeier raced in on goal but scuffed his shot wide right in the end.  The game really opened up after that as Colleyville lost discipline and shape.  The counter attacks were there for Heritage but every time they flew forward the would completely lose shape in the back and midfield inviting Trinity right back at them after losing the attack.

Trinity would get it tied in the 60th as a long free kick found Andrew Bertucci at the backpost for the close range tap in.  The Trojans had the match tied and now both teams had twenty minutes to find a winner.  Neither were able to break the tie though.

In the end I think the 1-1 score line was a fair reflection of the game.  Colleyville bossed the opening half with their midfield and had a deserved halftime lead.  Trinity emerged from the break and were the better side in the second half earning the tying goal.  In other District 6-5A action last night Irving earned an impressive tie holding last year's power Irving Nimitz all even at one.
