A tale of two games for the boys and girls soccer teams from Trophy Club Byron Nelson at the Texas State Soccer Tournament.  Both teams matches were decided in a shootout with the boys advancing to the state championship while the girls will be coming home.

The TC Nelson boys squeeked out a tight shootout victory over a talented team from Frisco Wakeland after eight shootout rounds.  The hero was goalkeeper Chase Therrien who made the game deciding save.  He narrowly missed the winning save the round before, but had it squirt in after getting good hands on the shot.

“I was aggravated that I got to it and palmed it away,” Therrien said of his first miss in the shootout. “But I just got a drink of water, forgot about the game, forgot about the fans and just did what I usually do.”

TC Nelson (27-1-2) fell behind Wakeland (22-5-3) in the sixth minute when Dylan Rakestraw deflected in a goal.  Nelson wasn't deterred though as they fought back to tie the match through a Mason Shank close range strike. From there neither side could beat the other defense and the game was destined to be decided in shootout.

The Trophy Club Nelson girls fate was not so kind.  They lost in a shootout themselves falling to Austin Vandegrift.  It is the second exit at the State Tournament in the past three years for the successful girls program.

After a scoreless opening half, TC Nelson in the 46th minute when freshman Alexis Smith sneaked one past the left post. The ball didn’t reach the back of the net, but Smith was able to snake through defenders and put enough pace on it for an off-balance roller that crossed the goal line.

Savannah Cavannaugh from Vandegrift tied the score minutes later and like the boys, we were destined for overtime and a shootout. Austin goalkeeper Mariah Lechner made a pair of saves while her team converted all five opportunities to take the win and advance to the state final against Wylie East.

“It’s always challenging going to a shootout,” said Nelson coach Philip Salyer, whose 2012 squad lost a title-game shootout to Highland Park. “One kick is going to decide it. It’s definitely heartbreaking.”
