FC Dallas had everything to play for on Tuesday night in the semifinals of the US Open Cup.  Playing on their home field FCD were unable to get past the Philadelphia Union losing out in penalty kicks.

Injuries were the story of the opening half as FC Dallas were forced to use all three substitutions by the start of the second half.  Walker Zimmerman, Mauro Diaz and Adam Moffat all were subbed leaving the home team with no substitutes for the remainder of the long match.  The game really opened up after the break when Philly took the lead in the 47th.  A quick free kick surprised Dallas leaving to a Vincent Okugo goal.  Dallas increased the pressure as the half went from there and should have had several goals.

Finally, Fabian Castillo tied the game in the 81st as he ran onto a pass from Blas Perez.  Zac McMath raced out from goal, but lost out to the speedy Castillo who rolled into the empty net.  Neither side could score in the extra time and penalties were needed.

In penalties it was Union keeper Zac McMath who turned the hero as he saved kicks from Blas Perez and Victor Ulloa.  The Perez shot could have been saved by a ten year old as he flicked a soft shot to the left side.  A very poor penalty and an easy save.  The Ulloa penalty was much more difficult as McMath was forced to stretch far to his right and push the ball around the post.  On the other side, Philadelphia made all four of their penalties.  It marks the first time in club history the Union will play for a major trophy.

Dallas coach Oscar Pareja was proud of his squad. “There is a frustration for not getting the final here,” Pareja said. “I thought the boys deserved it.”
