It was a bitter pill to swallow. The UNT women are out of the Sun Belt Tournament despite not allowing a goal over two matches. They dispatched Troy in the quarterfinals 2-0 behind goals from Michelle Young and Nikki Crocco earning a semifinal matchup with Western Kentucky.
UNT had beaten WKy in a tight 2-1 match earlier this year. This one would be just as tight as both sides fought for the elusive go head goal. Neither were able to find it though as the match drug on scoreless. North Texas looked like they had found the winning goal late only to see leading scorer Michelle Young's shot skim the post.
The soccer game went to penalty kicks where Western Kentucky would convert four of their five. UNT would miss their first and their final kick to lose 4-3 and crash out of the Sun Belt Tourney.
"It's unfortunate that this game has to be decided by penalty kicks," said North Texas Head Coach John Hedlund. "I thought we had won the game late when Michele Young's shot skimmed off the far post, it's defintely a game of inches."
