North Texas women open with pair of impressive wins

The season started perfectly for the UNT womens soccer program as they notched a pair of solid wins at home over the weekend.  First up came a Texas Southern squad on Friday night in the season opener and it was all UNT.  The visiting Texas Southern team were simply played off the pitch as the Mean Green notched a whopping 30 shots and 15 corner kicks in the match.  The only concerning issue would be that North Texas were only able to find three goals from all that attacking soccer.

"I think we played well offensively, especially in the second half," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "I was able to use a lot of players off my bench. I wanted to play a lot of the freshmen tonight. And I thought our young players performed well."

Sunday brought a much stiffer test as Oregon State arrived in Denton.  It turned out to be a very even matchup with the Pac 12 side, but as the match went on UNT slowly showed they were just a bit better.  The Mean Green were able to win it late on as sophomore Rachel Holden scored in the 87th minute to secure the 1-0 victory.

"It's a good feeling to be 2-0 and beat a Pac-12 team," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "One of our priorities is to protect our home field which we did this weekend."

The defense really set the tone for the opening weekend as keeper Jackie Kerestine grabbed a pair of shutouts.  Next up the Mean Green hits the road to South Texas where they will play at Houston and at Lamar on the weekend.
