Ursuline defeats Fort Worth Nolan on way to State Title

Different year same old story.  Ursuline defeats Fort Worth Nolan in the big match.  This year Nolan had dreams of finally breaking through.  They had beaten Ursuline twice in the regular season and were favorites to win the state title.  Instead Ursuline worked their playoff magic once again winning 3-0 with all three goals coming in the final 16 minutes of the match.

It was a quiet opening half of play as it seemed both were playing cautiously. Nolan had a solid wind at their backs and were unable to take advantage of it.  Ursuline cashed in on the advantage in the second half.  After the break the game really opened up and chances were created at both ends of the pitch.

With 16 minutes to go Ursuline finally broke the deadlock and it was their super-star freshman Madison Haley that became the hero.  The US under-17 national team ran down a long ball and flicked past the onrushing goalkeeper.  The Ursuline bench erupted as the ball bounced into the empty net. Madison Haley would score two more goals in the final minutes to close out the 3-0 victory.

On Saturday Ursuline captured their 24th consecutive TAPPS Division I girls soccer state championship.  They defeated district rivals Bishop Lynch in a penalty kick shootout after a scoreless match.  Katie Lund’s penalty kick in the shootout gave Ursuline the state. “That’s the kind of kid she is — she’s a game-changer,” Ursuline coach Allison Daus said. “We relied on her a lot this year. She had 23 goals on the season, so this was nothing new for her.”
