Ursuline Academy reclaimed the crown that was taken from it a year ago, winning the TAPPS Division I girls soccer state title with a 1-0 victory over Bishop Lynch on Saturday night. Elli Brunts headed in a cross by Elizabeth Barna in the 46th minute and it stood up the rest of the way, as the Bears' stout defense repeatedly smothered any attack the Lady Friars threw at them.

"I don't even remember it," Brunts said of the goal. "One minute the cross was coming and the next it was in the net. I honestly don't remember it."

The score came on swift through ball from Alyssa D'Aloise that was chased down by Barna along the left sideline and sent to the middle, five yards from the end line.

"She (D'Aloise) gave me that fast ball down the side and I just knew I had to get it in," Barna said. "We had to take advantage of the scoring opportunity."

It was the rubber match for the two powerhouses, which were facing each other in the title game for the third straight year. Bishop Lynch ended Ursuline's run of 24 consecutive state titles last year with a 2-1 victory. In 2014, Ursuline topped Bishop Lynch in a shootout for the title.  Ursuline finished the season with a 24-1-1 record. Bishop Lynch was 16-4-1.

"Our defensive line, wow; Rebecca Wildman, her job was to mark their No. 1 player," Ursuline coach Kelly Wilmoth said. "The rest of the back line fought to make sure one didn't get in the back of the net."

Wilmoth said said losing the title last year was a hard pill to swallow but the Bears are starting a new streak.  "They really wanted to get this back, especially for the 10 seniors we had last year," Wilmoth said. "It was tough on us. It was the Ursuline name on the line. Now we've got one, we're starting with one."

Anchored by Wildman, Mary Stoutenbugh, Isabel Treviño, and Peyton Robertson, the Ursuline defense made relatively easy work for keeper Leah Archer.

"I don't think I've ever seen (the defense) play more together as a unit," Archer said. "We shut every single player down. They made it tough get through the back line. I can't thank them enough."
