Fort Worth Vaqueros beat Liverpool despite red card

The fireworks were not only in the sky this July 4th they were also on the field as Liverpool Warriors and the Fort Worth Vaqueros played an entertaining match in Fort Worth.  Chances came in bunches in the first half as the two teams went back and forth.

Liverpool gifted the Vaqueros an early goal when the visitors lazily turned over a ball in their own third.  Hilton Ngwa made them pay as he easily finished a pass from Jorge DeLeon.  Typical Liverpool fashion this year as a turnover in back led to an easy finish for their opponents.

Liverpool earned a dangerous free kick in the 10th minute curling a ball around the FW wall.  Vaqueros keeper Arturo Sanchez dove and pushed the ball out for a corner despite the shot always going wide.  Minutes later Liverpool would have the match all even as Sanchez gave up a soft one.  After the Vaqueros failed to clear a corner a low shot was put on frame that bounced over Sanchez as he dove down to get it.

Three minutes later and Livepool had the lead as FW defense completely broke down on the right side allowing the winger to race in on goal.  Jacob Speed chose to stay with the center forward and left the Liverpool winger to finish comfortably into the lower corner.

The Vaqueros had a glorious chance to tie the game as a well weighted ball sprung Ngwa in behind the visiting defense.  Unfortunately he drove his shot straight into the chest of the Liverpool keeper. It was Liverpool's turn next to let a golden opportunity go begging as they raced out on a two on one after a FW turnover.  The shot from ten yards went just high clipping the crossbar and going out.  Soon after a header from Keaton Parks was disallowed on a close offside call. The ball immediately went to the other end where Corwin Carbonell expertly poked home a near post cross from close range.  The match would go to the break tied at an entertaining 2-2.

The game changed completely in the 51st minute as a nice Liverpool pass sprung a winger in on goal.  Vaqueros keeper Sanchez raced out of his box and completely wiped out the Liverpool attacker.  Straight red card to Sanchez and FW were down to ten men for forty minutes.  The game would flip, but not in the direction you would expect.  A total tactical failure from Liverpool would actually tilt the field in the Vaqueros favor despite playing a man down.

Liverpool chose to move to basically what looked like a 4-2-4 as they left four attackers up front the rest of the match.  It was a massive mistake as it allowed Fort Worth to completely shred them in the midfield the final thirty minutes.  Warrior possession was almost non-existent from that point on.

Fort Worth took the lead despite the disadvantage in the 67th minute.  Liverpool left four attackers up front deciding against defending a corner kick..  The Vaqueros played short and Ricky Mejia beat Keaton Parks out of the corner and cruised into the penalty area untroubled.  He fired a perfect shot past the helpless keeper to the delight of the home fans.

For Worth almost converted another corner kick in the 75th as Liverpool looked completely lost on set piece defense.  Nestor Martinez was allowed to receive the ball inside the penalty area, but his left footed shot narrowly whizzed past the post.

Liverpool had lost the plan as they reverted to just blasting long balls forward rather than actually try to take advantage of their extra man.  It made the game much easier than it should have been for the Vaqueros and allowed them to comfortably see out the 3-2 win despite playing a man down.
