World Cup Russia 2018 Draw

The long awaited draw for the 2018 FIFA World Cup is in the books and there are definitely some mouthwatering games to look forward to!  The hosts got a very kind draw while most of the big boys were able to avoid each other leaving no obvious Group of  Death in my opinion.  Group B is certainly intriguing as neighbors Portugal and Spain kick off the group play.  And the opening match in Group F is also going to be fascinating as Mexico face giants Germany. The newcomers were awarded mixed fates as Egypt were treated well while Iceland, Panama and Peru will face difficult schedules.

Group A
Russia, Uruguay, Egypt, Saudi Arabia
Russia got the dream draw for the hosts as they were drawn in a very manageable Group A.  They'll open against Saudi Arabia then face off with Egypt and Uruguay.  I think all parties will be happy to be in this grouping as any of the four countries could advance from here.  Watch out for Egypt in this group led by Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.

Group B
Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Iran
A very difficult grouping...perhaps the Group of Death?  Hated rivals and neighbors Portugal & Spain will battle it out in the opening matchday. The loser will be in a bad way as both Iran and Morocco are very capable squads.

Group C
France, Australia, Peru, Denmark
A tricky group for sure as both Australia and Denmark will not be easy matches, but France should feel good about their fortunes.  One of the favorites should manage this group easily.  The question is who comes 2nd?  My hopes are Peru just tears this World Cup up.  I think their frenetic South American style will cause difficulties for Australia and Denmark.

Group D
Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria
Argentina cannot feel bad after seeing their grouping. They'll have enough creativity to break down a resolute Iceland squad and then battle it out with Croatia for the group.  I was hoping for a better draw for minnows Iceland but this is not good at all.  I can't even see them winning a match here unfortunately for those hoping for another cinderella run.

Group E
Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia
A dream draw for Brazil who will be looking for big things in Russia 2018.  Costa Rica and Serbia will be nothing more than cannon fodder while Switzerland will be a tougher nut to crack. Still Brazil rolls into the knockout stages from Group E with the Swiss as clear second favorites to advance.

Group F
Germany, Mexico, Korea Republic, Sweden
An awful draw for Mexico as they face the one team they truly wanted to avoid in the opening round, Germany.  El Tri simply cannot deal with the size and strength of the Germans.  Throw in a strong Sweden side along with South Korea and even a talented Mexico is in trouble.  I felt with a good draw that Mexico could have gone deep into the 2018 World Cup....I have my doubts they even get out of this grouping now.

Group G
Belgium, England, Tunisia, Panama
Strong at the top with Belgium & England, but weak at the back end with Tunisia and Panama.  Gareth Southgate and World Cup sputterers England have definitely landed a dream draw. Fail to get out of this easy group England will be lambasted once again.  The group could already be decided when England & Belgium meet in the final matchday.

Group H
Poland, Senegal, Colombia, Japan
Another interesting grouping with no monster nation.  Any of the four could easily come out of Group H.  I'll rate Colombia as slight favorites, but who knows how this group plays out.  Japan can be very talented and who knows which Senegal shows up.
