World Cup 2022 opener here in Dallas?

Could the opening game of the 2022 World Cup be right here in North Texas? You betcha! The US Soccer Federation submitted their World Cup bids for 2018 and 2022 to FIFA on Friday and part of the bid was to stage the World Cup opening game right here at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. How cool would that be? The 2018 World Cup looks to be going to England without much of a fight. Only Russia stands in the way, but the infrastructure of ready stadiums in England and the fact they havent hosted since 1966 make England easy favorites. With this year in South Africa and 2014 in Brazil the natural rotation brings the World Cup to the US or Asia in 2022. Probably the stiffest competition for the 2022 bid will come from Australia and Qatar. If the US can win the 2022 World Cup expect North Texas to be a major player in the tournament with several matches to be played in Arlington. FIFA will announce the winners of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups on December 4th.
